Georgetown students from the M.A. program in Eurasian, Russian and East European Studies (MAERES) recently visited the Embassy of Kazakhstan as part of the course “Caspian Sea Energy Resources: Theory and Practice” led by Prof. Brenda Shaffer. The students met with Mr. Arman Sapargaliyev, the Second Secretary of the Kazakhstan embassy. Students got a chance to hear firsthand of recent developments in Central Asia, and discussed U.S. relations with Kazakhstan. Prof. Shaffer’s course examines the main trends in Caspian and Central Asian oil and natural gas production and export, and looks at the influence of energy production on the political, social, economic and environmental developments of the region.
